One of the easiest ways to stand out from your competition… Mail a thank you card after you meet with them.
It takes a little extra time and a little extra effort but that’s the point.
I’m not perfect, I don’t always do it, but man does it make a big difference in the overall experience.
After you meet with somebody, take it offline and send them a thank you card.
Here’s the thing. If somebody met with ten or fifteen potential vendors in the past month, how many of those vendors do you think sent a thank you card?
I’m going to guess zero. (I can just about guarantee it’s zero – I can count on one hand the number I’ve received in my career.)
And I’m not talking about gifts or anything like that. Just taking the time to hand write a thank you card. Thanking them for their time. That’s all you need to do.
Now that prospect remembers who you are and remembers what you talked about.
Maybe they don’t say yes right away. But two months, three months, a year down the road, they come back, and they remember that you sent that.
Heck, they’ll be cleaning off their desk a year from now and go, “oh yeah, that was from those guys at Pipelineology.”
It makes the conversations you’re having last much longer.
Now, where do you get the addresses? Most companies have an address right on Google Maps. If you’re dealing with really small operators, look them up in the White Pages. For the most part, those two things will get you every address you need.
And here’s the thing. Since it takes a little bit of effort, nobody else is doing it. Which makes it a super easy way to be the one person who stands out.
Just try it for a month – see what happens.
